The top of Slieve Binnian in the Mourne Mountains on a cold and misty morning can be an eerie place at the best of times.
But for one Co Down couple, after pausing to look at photographs captured near the summit during their early morning trek, the scene looked a lot more chilling than they expected.
The picture, taken by Bangor man Steve Hamilton (36) last Sunday of his girlfriend Lizann Hughes, from Comber, left them feeling more than a little unnerved.
“I have to say it did spook us,” Steve told the Belfast Telegraph. “It was such a beautiful morning, misty and silent. We stopped to take a photo, as you do, and thought nothing more of it.”
A few minutes later, as the pair started to head down, they took a break for a snack, flicked through their photos and made a startling discovery.
“It looked like someone was there, crouching over with an arm dangling out,” said Steve. “We thought it looked like Gollum from Lord of the Rings.
“We were a little freaked out. It was silent and we were sure we were completely alone up there.
“We’ve heard other people have reported ghostly figures, but we were stunned to see that in the photograph.”
