Gloucestershire boasts some pretty unique wildlife from feral pigs to mysterious sightings of ‘large black cats,’ but now it looks like another creature is living among us. Wolves have been apparently spotted living in the Forest of Dean and wildlife explorer Frank Tunbridge is investigating.
Over the years he has been called out to numerous reports of big cat sightings but most recently he has been asked to help find wolves which are apparently living in the Forest of Dean, just outside Coleford. One day Frank had a call from a man who said that he had seen wolves out and about whilst he had been walking his Jack Russell dog. Frank said: “So I have been called to reports of wolves now living around Coleford. I met with a chap that had seen one and also his work colleague on a different day had also seen a wolf as well. “He was describing to me how he had been out walking his dog and all of a sudden a wolf had appeared on the track in front of him. I wanted to be sure that he had not confused a wolf with a husky dog so I sent him a picture.
Liam Witness Account: I contacted you today as I have been experiencing some strange howls and noises close to home and I wondered if any of your readers had experienced anything of a similar nature. I’d say the first time I had ever noticed anything I would have been about 10-11 yrs old, it was just after I’d gone to bed in the summer and there were dogs barking everywhere along the streets and I was at my window listening to all the noise and commotion, after around half an hour of it starting all the barking stopped suddenly and I could hear a faint howl that sounded as if it was kind of distorted. Not a howl you would expect to hear like foxes or dogs, this howl was really strange. So I went and got my Mum so she too could listen to it and tell me what it was. She was stood at the window with me smirking at first as if she was just going along with it to humour me as I was young, but then she heard it herself and her face immediately dropped and she quickly said “Oh it’s nothing” I almost believed her but as soon as she said it she went all the way around the house checking that the doors were locked and closing all of the curtains. This might have been at around 9 pm because I remember it being around summer time and it was still pretty light outside
The second time was quite a long while after as I’m 21 now and I started to notice things again late last year around September time. It had started with minor things such as what I can only describe as hearing what sounded like a dustbin being dragged down the street at a ridiculous speed, then later in the night there were obvious sounds of things being thrown and hitting the wire fence on the field across the road from my house. I think the strangest of that was possibly hearing those noises and then hearing the horses in the field sounding like they were petrified and stampeding around. There were two nights where there was really long drawn out groaning sounds that would get closer to the house and then fade away, and this would repeat and then get closer again, both times they’d persist for around about an hour, maybe slightly longer but during that time every animal including the usually very loud dogs in the street were completely silent? When the noise stopped it seemed like every animal was in panic mode, or shaken up somehow?
One thing I will mention but I’m not entirely sure if it has a reasonable explanation or not is a night in August last year, I could hear a toddler murmuring outside on the street as if it was upset and I shrugged it off because the folk across the road often have their grand kids round and they are usually playing in the garden at daft times till late. After I had tried to ignore it for probably 10 minutes it went from murmuring to absolutely stomach churning screaming, It didn’t sound like kids playing at this point so I jumped out of bed and got dressed, I grabbed the bar we use to open and close the loft hatch without even realising and I ran outside thinking some child was being hurt or abducted? The moment that I got outside it stopped, everything was deadly silent, no-one was around, and that’s when it hit me about hearing from people with Dogman and Bigfoot encounters, where the creature may imitate sounds of children in distress or shout your name to lure people outside?
But at that point I put that out of my mind and I tried to rationalise the experience and I ran up and down at least five different streets looking for whatever made the noise and I saw nobody, and I didn’t see anyone who had come outside because they heard the racket too? There wasn’t even a house with its lights on with people looking out off the windows or twitching the curtains, it was deadly silent. The next day I asked my parents about what had happend in the night and they didn’t even know I’d gone out of the house let alone heard a kid screaming. Which I thought was strange because I literally burst out of my room and sprinted down the stairs not caring about making noise or waking anyone up. I have a recording of the “groaning” type noise I would be interested in knowing what people think it was because I have no idea at all? (included in video below)

Footsteps in the Night
Some years ago now myself and my friends decided to do a wild camp at the campsite at the foot of Ben Nevis and walk the mountain the next day spending the following night sleeping rough on the mountain, which I thought would be a nice little adventure and give us something to talk about for years to come. Our first night’s camp was pretty uneventful. The second night things changed!!!
Sleeping in a damp cold bivvy is not at all pleasant. I did finally drop off to sleep but I woke up for some unknown reason in the middle of the night. As I lay awake I could hear footsteps walking round us. At first I was quite interested in this, as I thought an animal of some description had paid us a visit. But as time went on I began to realise this was definitely a two legged creature, with quite purposeful steps. The footsteps, by now, were really close – only a couple of feet away, and I started to get the chills and had a massive fear come over me from nowhere, I was on high alert instantley.
Given my colleagues were also only a couple of feet away, I had no real reason to worry as they (apart from anything else) are big and very strong. Eventually I calmed myself and drifted off to sleep. I remember waking up at around 0:600 hrs with ice covering the outside of the bivvy. I decided to pack everything up and walk to the campsite for a well deserved lovely hot shower.
The other two eventually packed up their equipment and followed me down the mountain. Dean complained heavily about my kicking him in the head as his bivvy was on the ground at my feet? Simon complete with smoking jacket and cravat said he slept like a baby. I only briefly thought in passing about the footsteps creeping round us during the night, but put it down to being over tired and possibly being awoken in half slumber where dreams can get mixed up with reality and therefore didn’t feel it necessary to tell the others.
Having got ourselves nice and clean with warm dry clothes it was time to make our way back south. The drive was, as usual, monotonous, especially when we arrived at the M6 motorway. By then we had run out of things to talk about until Dean said “did you hear any footsteps walking round us last night?” and at this point I realised I hadn’t dreamt it after all.
We discussed this for a while and none of us could explain it, Simon simply did not hear it as he slept right through and Dean, to this day, has never given it much thought. I still have no idea what it was, and, as this was some years ago, will never know, only that it was a strange experience.
We had a safe journey home and true to his word Dean has never walked up a mountain again. For my part, it was something I wouldn’t have missed for the world and I look back on that little adventure with such fond memories. I still have the bivvy bag and have not slept in it since, simply because the opportunity hasn’t arisen. Simon given he didn’t hear the footsteps has not given it a second thought. Writing this I still get the chills about who, or what, it may have been.
This Account came in through the Beasts of Britain Blog: “Hi there… Happy New Year, I’m not sure what this was but here’s a possible encounter that happened to myself and some friends when we were children.
At the time this happened I was around 11 yr old and this happened around 1983/4…
I live in Liverpool UK and grew up in a place called Halewood. There is a fairly large woodland that is intersected by a disused rail line. As far back as I can recall the railway has been out of use, we played there a lot as kids. The woods were a creepy place but lots of us would regularly frequent them, climbing trees or riding our bikes, just doing normal kid stuff, making a racket most day’s. In some parts of the wood the trees grew closely together and were very thick, making it hard to manoeuvre through them, or even enter into them in some places…
14/12/17: Today I was contacted by a lady researcher in Wales: I was at my home property in Wales tonight about 5 pm when I heard 3 loud unusual calls in the Carmarthen /Brecon Welsh boarder Towns. I was just at home, and there are woodlands at the back of the house, and the calls seemed to be coming from that direction, The house we live in backs onto the woodlands then there are mountains behind that, so there are no buildings or anything in that direction I can think of that the calls could of been. I jumped up but by the time I had made it outside the dogs everywhere in the town were going crazy and drowned out the noise. After a minute everything went quiet so I went back inside. Then about 20 mins later there was one long loud sound again (that I heard) and there may of been more as the dogs went crazy again.
